Many business processes involve human judgment and ad hoc activities such that they are difficult to support with current BPM automation. Many of these processes are characterized as "case management" because the planning, actions, events, and decisions are driven by the state of a situation, a case, and human judgment. IT systems often support case management record keeping but provide little support for ad hoc processes. Case management automation has been discussed for many years.
