The only thing that can be definitively stated about cloud computing today is that the issues and terms surrounding it are themselves cloudy at best. The term "cloud" was likely coined to signify the concept of computing across the Internet, as the Internet is often represented in network diagrams with a cloud icon. But this term has been appropriated by a myriad of techniques and technologies, some of which do not involve the Internet at all.
