Carlos Silva is Head Remote Sensing Scientist at Pachama, where he oversees the science for quantifying forest carbon from space and airborne observations, including LiDAR, radar, and satellite imagery. Dr. Silva also leads development of Pachama’s carbon-crediting standards to ensure that credits transacted correspond to net reductions in forest carbon emissions to the atmosphere. Previously, he worked on the science team of NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission, a LiDAR instrument mounted on the International Space Station that measures forest structure globally. Dr. Silva’s research experience integrates a range of satellite and airborne observations with Earth system models to estimate forest carbon from the leaf to the landscape. He earned a master's degree in economics and public policy from Princeton University, a PhD in ecology and evolutionary biology from Brown University, and has worked in developing forest carbon projects for both the voluntary and compliance carbon markets.
