In this article, we will describe four "modernization projects" that succeeded using agile development methods, open source development frameworks, real-time project panels, and radically colocated development. The largest project involved replacing 11 million lines of legacy code (COBOL and C++) with only 500,000 lines of Java code. All the projects were completed on time, on spec, and on budget.
