Consider the influence furniture can have on a face-to-face meeting. A table represents a place of meeting. You eat with friends and family at a table, you hold business meetings at a table, and when you visit your doctor's consulting practice, you often sit across the table from him or her. The table creates a platform upon which to host a meeting, while it also provides a psychological safety zone between the parties engaging in the meeting.
